Cover types, explained

Hospital, Extras — or both?

Most Aussies need one, the other or both. Here's the difference in plain English.

Hospital cover

Pays for treatment as a private patient in hospital — public or private.

  • Choice of doctor and (often) private room
  • Cuts public-hospital wait times for elective surgery
  • Avoids the Medicare Levy Surcharge if you earn over the threshold
  • Some plans include pregnancy & birth, joint replacements, mental health

Extras cover

Pays toward day-to-day services Medicare doesn't cover.

  • Dental (general & major)
  • Optical — glasses, contacts, prescription sunnies
  • Physiotherapy, chiropractic, remedial massage
  • Psychology, podiatry, dietetics
Switching, the fine print

Four things worth knowing before you switch.

Waiting periods transfer

Switching like-for-like inside 30 days of cancelling? The law generally protects you from re-serving waiting periods — JustSwitch confirms this case-by-case.

Lifetime Health Cover loading

If you took out hospital cover after 31 of the year you turned 31, you may pay a 2%+ LHC loading. Switching funds doesn't reset it — but it transfers cleanly.

Transfer certificate

Your old fund issues a transfer certificate that proves how much waiting period you've already served. Your new fund picks up where the old one left off.

Cooling-off period

Most funds give you 30 days to back out of a new policy and get any premiums refunded if you change your mind.
